Data

Gonzalo Martínez Navajas graduated in Biology by the University of Granada. During this period he obtained a Departments Scholarship Collaboration funded by MECD. After that, he completed the Genetic and Evolution Official Master (University of Granada). Then, he joined the research group “Gene Regulation, Stem Cells and Development” headed by Dr. Pedro José Real Luna, obtaining the Initiation to Research for Master's Official Students Grant. Then he joined the CTS-963 research group, headed by Dr. Juan Antonio Marchal Corrales, with a young researchers contract based on the Youth Guarantee System. During this period, he obtained an international patent studying the miRNAs role on cancer. Actually, he is in Dr. Real Luna’s group, working with induced pluripotent stem cells from a patient with a rare mutation, repairing those cells using CRISPR/Cas9 and a lentiviral approach (Gene –Cellular Therapy). He is funded with a predoctoral contract from the Carlos III Health Institute (PFIS contract).

Development of Human Bernard Soulier experimental models by cell reprogramming.
Design gene therapy tools for Bernard Soulier treatment (CRISPR/Cas9, therapeutical lentiviral vectors, etc).

The most notable result of your research

Correction of the Bernard Soulier disease mutation on induced pluripotent stem cells from a patient (CRISPR-HDR).
Testing antitumoral non human miRNAs activity on cancer human cell lines.

How did you come to science and why are you still here?

Since I was a child it was clear for me that I wanted to work with stem cells due to their potentiallity. Actually I keep working in this complex area due to my vocation, curiosity and interest on improve people’s life quality.

A scientific desire

My personal wish is that, science, and specifically, researchers, be better valued by society and Central Government. Actually, science situation in our country is not being esteemed as it should be, for this reason, many young researches have to leave the country trying to find better opportunities, giving their potentiallity to these countries. Retrieving our researchers is as important as valuing them properly.
