Doctor in Biology at the University of Granada,1991. Teacher at the University of Almería since 1994. Senior Lecturer since 2001.
I have participated in 14 projects or contracts, I have been the principal investigator in 5 of them. My research experience has resulted in 33 publications in scientific journals, five book chapters, and 46 conference papers.

Lines of investigation

I have developed my research on nutrition and animal feed.
Currently the priority line is the evaluation of insects as an alternative food source and their use in aquaculture and livestock.
Another field of research is welfare and stress in animals bred for human consumption


The most notable result of your research

I think we are currently receiving the biggest recognition in this innovative research of "insects as an alternative food source". The latest articles published in journals of high impact have made us work closer to companies and to national and international research groups.
Currently we have analyzed a large number of insects species, knowing both their limitations and their strengths. This will allow us to develop different management techniques to improve their nutritional value and their use by animals that consume them.


How did you come to science and why are you still here?

I think it was out of curiosity. it is always exciting to deal with a problem or issue and to seek the causes and / or solutions. Honestly all happened spontaneously ; when I was studying biology I never thought to become a researcher. I think it was a combination of personal interest and random facts.


A scientific desire

Especially I would like the results of our research to have an effect on society, this means we would overcome any problems / current limitation in our social environment. In addition, it would be a real achievement that our investigation would enhance the sustainable and respectful production systems with our environment.
